Researching in a Starbase Laboratory is pretty important as Starbases are incredibly weak by themselves. Most researches will cost Supplies but some will cost Starbux to start. Just like starships, once you begin researching something, you cannot remove the Laboratory until you finish or rush the research

Explanation
Researching this option allows you to build Starbases with a special bit of extra space that can only be taken up by Resource Rooms. The tradeoff is that you have one less ship health compared to non-extended Starbases. Once researched, you can simply go to the Shipyard and buy the extension for 5K Starbux . After that, your able switch back and forth between your ships for free (1 Hour Delay).
